The harsh reality...

Recently I saw the movie, “The Social Dilemma”. I was awestruck after seeing that movie. It was shocking to know that how these social media companies use us as an asset to dilate their needs. Being in the IT field, I am aware of the fact that we design elements in such a way that the users of the product won’t leave the screen which they are using. But, there is a difference between using a commercial product and using a social media product. While the intent of these people building a social media platform was connecting people, repercussions of it have been a lot more. I have seen people struggle to get out of the social media addiction. While it’s amazing to see how these companies have built models based on AI to show relevant ads on these platforms, the thought of getting your personal information leaked is equally terrifying.
I have always believed that the technology should be used as an extension to the day to day activities of humans, and that it shouldn’t disrupt the lives of them. Before the situation goes out of hand, stringent norms should be defined over the use of social media platforms. Doing so would increase the productivity in humans, thus enabling them to achieve much more than what they are capable of.
